Construction of the Biobed layer
The enclosure has approximately 20–30 cm of bedding on a concrete floor. The floor has a slight slope towards the windows. The depth of the bedding layer is determined by the location of the radiators, as a deeper layer would cover them.
Workflow
Daily maintenance consists of removing faeces and leftover food. The bedding needs to be watered a couple of times a week. Normally it takes 5-10 minutes to water the bedding, as it should not become too wet.
New material is added when the bedding layer begins to decrease in depth. However, due to the low impact from the animals, this may only be necessary once a month, and usually less frequently once the material has settled.
Advantages of the Biobed
When the bedding is kept sufficiently humid, it has a positive effect on both odour and dust levels in the facility, creating a healthier environment for both the animals and the zookeepers.
The animals also appear to make greater use of the floor area than they tend to when wood shavings are used as bedding.
