Indoor Area: 10m²+
Total Substrate Depth: 25cm+

Why switch to Biobed?
The advantages of using Biobed for armadillos include a significant reduction in ammonia fumes. Since armadillos live close to the ground, they are particularly exposed to these fumes. The Biobed also helps reduce dust and odor in the enclosure.
A bioactive substrate is especially beneficial for armadillos as it provides enrichment, which is one of the most important aspects of animal welfare in captivity. Most armadillos are nocturnal and rely heavily on their sense of smell when digging and foraging in the substrate.
Construction of the Biobed Layer
Because armadillos dig extensively for food and create burrows, the substrate should be as deep as possible—ideally 30cm or more. For deep substrates, a coarse variant of Biobed is recommended, as it compacts less and retains more oxygen.
Adding beneficial invertebrates to the substrate is also recommended, as they help maintain a healthy bioactive environment and serve as a food source, encouraging natural foraging behavior in the armadillos.
Biobed in use across other zoos
Randers Rainforest has been using Biobed for their armadillos since spring 2023.
Aalborg Zoo has been using it for their armadillos since September 2024.
