Primates On BIOBED NY VRAA ZOO

Why Switch to Biobed?

Copenhagen Zoo replaced the sand bedding with Biobed in june 2024. The main reason was to reduce dust and odors in the facility, benefiting both the chimpanzee and the zookeepers.

Construction of the Biobed Layer

It has approximately 25 cm of biobed covering the entire bottom indoors. No drainage system is implemented beneath the biobed, which is laid directly on a concrete base.

Observations

After 1 month

It works very well. It is easy to clean and there is minimal waste during cleaning. However, we have only had it in the facility for just under a month, so we do not yet know how it will perform in the long term. With other types of standard wood chips, we have previously experienced issues with mold and significant dust generation at times.

After 12 month

It has a positive effect on odor control and makes cleaning easier. Furthermore, we have observed virtually no mold or fungal growth in the wood chips, and dust generation is minimal and much less waste material to handle.
