Revolutionize
BioSubstrate has the potential to transform the substrate industry by offering a sustainable, high-performance alternative to peat.
By combining upcycled biogas digestate — a by-product of biogas production — with willow compost, BioSubstrate combines the best of two worlds in what we call a double-green focus: environmentally responsible and technically advanced. This innovative combination addresses the growing demand for peat-free solutions while utilizing residual materials that would otherwise go to waste.
BioSubstrate is designed for scalability and industrial efficiency. It can be produced in large volumes, thanks to streamlined processes and robust supply chains. Our in-house technical expertise enables us to incorporate additional components — such as fertilizers, gypsum, or other soil enhancers —, allowing us to customize the growing media to meet specific production requirements and recipes.
With BioSubstrate, we aim to set a new standard for sustainable horticulture substrates, delivering both environmental benefits and reliable performance for professional growers worldwide.
Upcycle
This process occure when low value residual biomasses from farming are upcycled in a biogas plant and the de-gassed fiberwaste from the biogas production is upcycled again in an AST Add On plant to create high-value substrate.

Recycle
The cycle is closed when the sustainable substrate is used as substrate for food production.

HENRIK BACH
Henrik has a background in both agriculture and the insurance industry and has contributed to the development of Ny Vraa’s growing media. He has also been involved in the cultivation and selection of the willow clones used in the willow compost developed at Ny Vraa.
Henrik founded the subsidiary Salixin, which develops and now markets willow extracts for cosmetics and dietary supplements — products that are today sold in more than 28 countries worldwide.
JAN ASTRUP
For the past 15 years, Jan has been part of the global substrate industry, first as CEO of Pindstrup Mosebrug and most recently as CTO of Klasmann-Deilmann.
During the same period, Jan has been a member of the board of Growing Media Europe, the growing media producers' industry organisation.
ANDERS BACH
Anders has been behind the development of willow compost at Ny Vraa for over 10 years. He was the originator of the idea to create a new growing medium from the willow production at Ny Vraa — a product now sold across Denmark under the name DYRK. Anders is responsible for testing and developing new products, including those created for Biosubstrate.
Trained as a farmer, he has more than 20 years of experience in willow cultivation, machinery development, and — through his work with growing media — has gained deep expertise in the microorganisms, fungi, and biological processes essential for successful growing media.
PETER DAMGAARD NIELSEN
Partner in Advanced Substrate Technologies, which for 10 years has developed and refined the process to upcycle degassed biofibre into a high-quality growing medium.
Peter has also successfully transferred the technology from bacterial water purification in aquaculture to digestate biomass, where the conversion of ammonium to nitrate reduces nitrogen loss on land from digestate biomass.
